Invisalign Q&A

by Angela Lee, DDS

What is Invisalign®?

Invisalign® is an orthodontic system that uses a series of removable plastic trays called aligners to move your teeth into proper alignment over a period of several months. Because the aligners can be removed for eating and brushing and because the clear aligners are almost invisible while they're being worn, Invisalign® has become a very popular alternative to traditional braces.

How does Invisalign® work?

Invisalign® uses a series of aligners in different shapes customized for your mouth. These aligners are worn in a specific sequence to gently move your teeth into their new positions, with most treatments taking 18 months or less to complete. Unlike traditional braces, there are no wires to tighten or rubber bands or springs involved, and there are no sharp edges to poke into lips and gums.

What is the Invisalign® process like?

Invisalign® begins with an impression or mold of your teeth, as well as a series of careful measurements. The mold and measurements are used by a computer system to make virtual models of your teeth, showing the movements they need to make over time to achieve ideal alignment. The series of clear aligners are custom-made using those virtual models. During treatment, you'll need to change your aligners about every two weeks to help your teeth continue to shift into their new positions.

Is Invisalign® a good choice for me?

Invisalign® offers systems for adults and teens whose adult teeth have not finished emerging. It can be used for a wide range of alignment issues, including overcrowding, overbites, underbites and crossbites, and gaps between teeth. However, there are cases where Invisalign® is not the best option. Scheduling a consultation is the best way to learn if Invisalign® is right for you.
