Crowns Q & A

by Angela Lee, DDS

What are crowns?

Crowns are protective “jackets” for teeth, designed to slide over an existing tooth to provide additional strength and protection and to cover cosmetic defects like cracks, broken edges, and large, dark fillings. They're also used following root canal therapy to provide additional strength to the treated tooth and to hide discoloration that may occur, and they're used during bridge placement to strengthen teeth used to support the bridge. Crowns are made of very hard, durable material that can be tinted to blend beautifully with neighboring teeth for a natural, healthy appearance.

What is the crown procedure like?

Crowns are usually placed in two visits. During the first visit, an impression is made of your tooth which will serve as a model for your crown. Your tooth will be gently shaped to provide room for the crown so it fits around your tooth without crowding neighboring teeth, and a temporary crown will be put in place to protect the tooth. You'll also choose the tint of your crown at this appointment. At the second visit, the temporary crown will be removed and the new crown will be cemented in place and shaped for a perfect fit.

Are crowns hard to care for?

No, crowns can be kept in good shape with regular brushing and flossing and routine checkups to ensure they're not loose. You can preserve them by avoiding biting on hard candies or chewing on ice, both of which can damage crowns as well as natural teeth.

How long will my crown last?

Today's crowns are made of superior materials designed to last for many years. With good care and regular dental checkups, you can expect a crown to last for 10 to 20 years.
